The office of the Prime Minister in Nigeria was first created in 1957, when Nigeria moved closer to self-government under the Macpherson Constitution (1954–1957 reforms) and later the Lyttleton Constitution (1954 amendments and political developments leading up to it). In 1957, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa became the first Prime Minister of Nigeria (initially in a self-governing capacity at the federal level before full independence in 1960).
