Before the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, African countries were divided into two main political groups:
1. The Casablanca Group – Led by Ghana, this group advocated for immediate African unity and a federal system.
2. The Monrovia Bloc – Led by Nigeria, this group supported a gradual approach to African unity, respecting the sovereignty of individual states.
Nigeria was a strong member of the Monrovia Bloc, which eventually influenced the formation of the OAU, promoting cooperation among African nations without sacrificing national sovereignty.
