At the time of Nigeria's independence in 1960, the Defence Pact with Britain was viewed by many Nigerians as an affront to the country's sovereignty. The agreement allowed Britain to have a military presence in Nigeria and intervene in its affairs if necessary. For many Nigerians, this was seen as a symbol of continued colonial influence. The pact was perceived as undermining Nigeria's pride as a newly independent nation.
