A federal state is a system of government in which powers are constitutionally divided between the central (federal) government and other coordinate units (such as states or regions), with each level operating independently within its sphere. In Nigeria, for example, power is shared between the Federal Government and the 36 State Governments. Both levels derive their powers from the Constitution and are not subordinate to each other in their constitutional areas.
