The African Union (AU), established in 2002, differs from the Organization of African Unity (OAU), which was dissolved in 2001, in several key areas. One of the significant differences is that the AU has more effective tools for decision enforcement. This includes institutions like the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights and the Peace and Security Council, which are designed to take action on decisions, enforce policies and address conflicts. Both organisations had an assembly of Heads of States but under different names. While the OAU had the Assembly of Heads of States and Governments, the AU had the Assembly of the African Union.
