While the transition from the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to the African Union (AU) in 2002 covered political and social goals, the primary shift in focus was toward economic integration and global competitiveness.
The OAU was established in 1963 with a "liberation" mandate—its main job was to end colonialism and apartheid. Once those goals were largely achieved, African leaders realized the continent needed a new vehicle focused on the modern challenges of the 21th century.
