Nationalism developed later in French West Africa compared to British West Africa mainly because of the French policy of Assimilation and Association.
Under French colonial rule:
Africans were encouraged to become “French” in culture and outlook.
Political power was centralized in France.
Local institutions had little real autonomy.
French administrators directly implemented government policies, leaving little room for local political participation.
Because of this tight control and centralised administration, political consciousness and organised nationalist movements developed more slowly.
