The Economic and Social Council of the United Nations Organization (UNO) is made up of
When ECOSOC was first established, it had 18 members. This number was set to allow for a manageable group that could represent a variety of interests and regions. In 1965, the membership was expanded to 27. This was a response to the growing number of UN member states and the need for broader representation. Another expansion occurred in 1971, increasing the number of members from 27 to 54. This change was driven by the need for even greater representation due to the increasing number of countries joining the United Nations, especially newly independent states from Africa and Asia.
