Montesquieu, in his work The Spirit of the Laws (1748), argued for the separation of powers among the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. His primary reason for advocating this system was to prevent tyranny and protect individual freedoms. He believed that if one person or group controlled all branches of government, it would lead to the abuse of power.
