In Government, political authority refers to legitimate power, that is, power that is accepted as rightful by the people.
Authority is different from mere power:
Power = ability to force or compel.
Authority = power that is recognized as legitimate and therefore obeyed willingly.
So, political authority exists when the people accept and recognize the government’s right to rule.
