Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi became Nigeria’s first military Head of State after the first military coup on 15 January 1966, which overthrew the civilian government of Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa.
Aguiyi-Ironsi ruled until 29 July 1966, when he was overthrown and killed in a counter-coup.
