After the introduction of the 1954 Lyttleton Constitution, Nigeria became a federation with three regions — Northern, Western, and Eastern. Each region was given its own government and a measure of autonomy. However, internal self-government (full control over regional affairs except defence and foreign policy) came at different times for each region:
Western Region – 1957
Eastern Region – 1957
Northern Region – 1959
Thus, the Northern Region attained internal self-government in 1959, a year before Nigeria’s independence in 1960.
