The Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC) was established in 1985 after General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida overthrew General Muhammadu Buhari in a palace coup.
Under General Ironsi (1966) → The governing body was the Supreme Military Council.
Under General Gowon (1966–1975) → He ruled mainly through the Supreme Military Council.
Under General Obasanjo (1976–1979) → Also operated with the Supreme Military Council before handing over to civilians in 1979.
Under General Buhari (1983–1985) → The ruling body was the Supreme Military Council too.
But under General Babangida (1985–1993) → He replaced the Supreme Military Council with the Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC), which became the highest decision-making body during his regime.
