The word 'Mbari' was initially coined from Yoruba expression 'Mbari Mbayo' which can be translated literally "If i have the opportunity to see, i would be delighted". The concept of Mbari started among the young talented artists, who grouped themselves at Ibadan in the early 1950s. They included playwriters, artists, dramatists, drummers etc who were not given any recognition nor granted any patronage because of colonial mentality. Although there is another Mbari, or Mbari houses which is in no way related to Mbari Mbayo of Ibadan. This Mbari art is practiced in Owerri in Imo state, and the word is coined from the Igbo word Mbari meaning ''act of creation''. The Owerri Mbari is a mud sculpture usually erected in mud houses made for their deified gods.
