Esau sold his birthright for a plate of pottage. This incident is recorded in Genesis 25:29-34, where Esau, coming in from the field hungry, exchanges his birthright, which entitled him to the privileges of the firstborn, for a plate of pottage that Jacob, his brother, had prepared.
