The diagram below illustrates the reproductive parts of livestock. Study it carefully and answer the questions that follow.

 

(a)  Name the parts labelled I, II, III, IV, V and VI.                      


(b)  State one function of each of the parts labelled I, II, III, IV, V and VI.                      

(c)  To prevent indiscriminate mating in the herd, a farmer decided to carry out a management practice to alter the functioning of the parts illustrated above.

(i)  Name the management practice.                                      
(ii) Name the two main parts of the illustrated diagram that would be of utmost benefit to the farmer in carrying out the management practice named in  (c)(i).

(a)  Name of the labelled parts
I   Vas deferens
II  Testis/testicle
III Penis
IV Epididymis
V   Urethra
VI  Prostate gland


(b)   Function of the labelled parts

I (Vas deferens)

  • Conducts sperm from the epididymis to the urethra

    
II (Testis)

  • Secretes spermatozoa;
  • Produces the male hormone called testosterone (androgen).

                                                                                    
 III (Penis)

  • Introduces semen into the female vagina during coitus /copulation/mating

 IV (Epididymis)

  • Site for spermatogenesis;
  • Temporary storage of sperm.

                                                                                         

V (Urethra)

  • Transports semen into the female vagina during coitus/mating/copulation;
  • Transports urine from the bladder to the external opening.

VI (Prostate gland)

  • Secretes prostate fluid which enriches the semen and aids the movement of spermatozoa;
  • Secretes prostate fluid which helps to inhibit urine formation during copulation and ejaculation.
