With a JAMB score of 282, you are a very strong candidate for Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) at the University of Calabar (UNICAL). However, for a course this competitive, your admission isn't "automatic" yet—it depends on your Aggregate Score.
1. The Math: How UNICAL Calculates Your Score
UNICAL typically uses a 50:50 weighting system between JAMB and Post-UTME. O'Level results are generally used for eligibility (must be one sitting for Medicine) but are not added to the numerical aggregate.
Your Current Points:
Your JAMB score of 282 gives you 35.25 points out of 50 (282 / 8).
2. Your Chances vs. The Cut-off
Historically, the merit cut-off for Medicine at UNICAL is one of the highest in the country, often landing around 73% – 75% (which translates to an aggregate of 292+ in the old scoring style or 73+ in the percentage style).
What You Need in Post-UTME
To hit a safe 75% aggregate (Merit):
You already have 35.25 from JAMB.
You need 39.75 more points from your Post-UTME (75 - 35.25).
Since the Post-UTME points are your score divided by 2, you would need to score at least 80/100 in the UNICAL screening.
Critical "Must-Knows" for UNICAL Medicine
One Sitting Only: UNICAL does not accept two sittings for Medicine and Surgery. You must have all 5 core credits (English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology) in one WAEC or NECO result.
The "280+ Club": Most students admitted for Medicine at UNICAL score between 270 and 310 in JAMB. At 282, you are right in the "sweet spot" of serious contenders.
Catchment Advantage: If you are an indigene of Cross River State, your 282 is extremely powerful. You would likely only need a moderate Post-UTME score (around 65–70) to secure admission.
