The life processes of a housefly are the basic activities it performs to stay alive. In Biology, these processes are called life processes or characteristics of living things.
The common life processes can be remembered as MRS GREN.
1. Movement
A housefly moves from one place to another using its wings and legs. 🪰
It flies to search for food, escape danger, and find places to lay eggs.
2. Respiration
Respiration is the process of releasing energy from food.
A housefly breathes through tiny openings on its body called Spiracles.
3. Sensitivity (Response to Stimuli)
A housefly can sense changes in its environment.
For example:
It quickly flies away when someone tries to hit it.
It detects food with its antennae and compound eyes.
4. Growth
A housefly grows through different stages in its life cycle:
Egg
Larva (maggot)
Pupa
Adult fly
This type of development is called Complete Metamorphosis.
5. Reproduction
Houseflies reproduce by laying eggs, usually on garbage, decaying food, or animal waste.
6. Excretion
Excretion is the removal of waste products from the body after digestion and metabolism.
7. Nutrition (Feeding)
A housefly feeds on liquid or semi-liquid food using its sucking mouthparts.
Sometimes it releases saliva on food to dissolve it before sucking it up.
