Rationalization in Psychology?

Rationalization is a defence mechanism (ego defense) in which apparent logical reasons are given to justify behaviour that is motivated by unconscious instinctual impulses. It is an attempt to find reasons for behaviours, especially one's own. It encourages irrational or unacceptable behaviour, motives or feelings and often involves ad hoc hypothesizing.

Rationalization is a process where we take an irrational number, like √2, and convert it into a rational number, like 1.414. We do this by finding a fraction that is equivalent to the irrational number. For example, √2 is the same as 2/1, which is a rational number. The process of finding a fraction equivalent to an irrational number is called "rationalizing the denominator".
