Political parties in Nigeria appeal to the ethnic, religious, and regional identities of the people. While parties are not required to form around these identities, they often do because voters tend to gravitate to the parties that they can most identify with at a local level. Parties run candidates and hold debates, much like they do in the United States and Britain, and they offer favors to supporters. Nigeria has a history of authoritarian rule and this has institutionalized a system of winner-take-all politics wherein an electoral loss is equivalent to a loss of all political power. Therefore, political competition in Nigeria often leads to anger within the political class and throughout the population, thus hindering full democratization.
