Diffusion is the movement of particles (atoms, ions or molecules) from a region in which they are in higher concentration to regions of lower concentration.
Examples
1. Sugar will diffuse through tea until the entire cup of tea is sweet. (We stir the tea to speed up the diffusion.)
2. The odour of food cooking diffuses throughout the kitchen. If you open the kitchen door it will spread into the next room.
Osmosis is the diffusion of a substance through a semipermeable membrane from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution.
Examples
Absorption of water by plant roots.
Reabsorption of water by the proximal and distal convoluted tubules of the nephron.
Reabsorption of tissue fluid into the venule ends of the blood capillaries.
Absorption of water by the alimentary canal, stomach, small intestine and the colon.

Diffusion is the net movement of molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.
Examples
1. You can smell perfume because it diffuses into the air and makes its way into your nose.
2. Cigarette smoke diffuses into the air.
3. The diffusion of chemicals and gases in and out of cells is an essential activity in human organs.
Osmosis is the movement of a solvent (such as water) through a semipermeable membrane (as of a living cell) into a solution of higher solute concentration that tends to equalize the concentrations of solute on the two sides of the membrane.
Exmaples include:
1. If you’ve ever wondered how roots generate “pressure” to withdraw water and nutrients from the soil, it’s through osmosis. This is accomplished by attracting the polar nutrients in the soil toward the root’s cells. It’s a very clever trick because the nutrients bring water with them and therefore solve this necessary problem for plants.
