Lagos was annexed as a coony in 1861..became a colony in 1862. Was a crown colony in 1874

The British consulate was established in 1849,and the territory under the consulate included the area from lagos to Bimbia in the Cameroon. In 1853,Lagos became a separate consulate. In 1861, Lagos became a crown colony. In 1900,the British government divided the entire Nigeria into three administrative units- the northern protectorate, the southern protectorate and the already existing lagos colony. In 1906, the British government merged the southern protectorate and the lagos colony understand the same name, "protectorate of the southern Nigeria and the colony".In 1914,the British government through Lord Lugard, amalgamated the two existing protectorates under a single administration and this resulted to the unification of Nigeria.

Lagos became a crown colony of the
British Empire in 1861. Before that
time, the British government had
perfected its colony administration
system of administration in the West
Indies and in India. And so, it did not
take any time to set up its typical
crown colony administration in Lagos.
By October 1862, a Legislative Council
comprised of a Chief Justice, Colonial
Secretary and a senior military officer
in command of British troops stationed
in Lagos, had been constituted.
