In medias res means starting a story in the middle of the action instead of from the beginning.
The audience is thrown directly into important events, and the earlier background is explained later through dialogue, flashbacks, or narration.
Example:
Instead of starting with:
“A boy was born in a village…”
the story may begin with:
“The boy was already running from soldiers…”
Then later, the audience learns what happened before.
This technique is commonly used in:
- drama
- novels
- movies
- epics
because it quickly captures attention and creates suspense.
