Attributes of Humility in the Epistles
Across the epistles, humility is shown through:
Putting others first
(Philippians 2:3–4) – valuing others above yourself, not being selfish or proud.
Gentleness and meekness
(Ephesians 4:2) – being patient, calm, and not harsh with others.
Submission to God and others
(James 4:7, 1 Peter 5:5) – accepting God’s authority and respecting others.
Willingness to serve
(Philippians 2:5–7, using Jesus as the example) – serving instead of seeking status.
Teachable spirit
(James 1:21) – being open to correction and instruction.
Avoiding pride
(Romans 12:3) – not thinking too highly of yourself.
Rewards of Humility in the Epistles
The epistles also clearly state what humility brings:
Exaltation by God
(James 4:10, 1 Peter 5:6) – God lifts up those who humble themselves.
Grace from God
(James 4:6) – “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Peace and unity with others
(Philippians 2:1–2) – humility helps build strong, peaceful relationships.
Honor in due time
(1 Peter 5:6) – recognition comes at the right time, not by force.
Spiritual growth and wisdom
(James 3:13) – humility is connected with true wisdom.
