A score of 280 in JAMB is a fantastic start for studying Law at the University of Ibadan (UI). While Law is one of the most competitive courses there, your score puts you in a strong position—but you’ll need to follow it up with a solid Post-UTME performance to secure your spot.
UI calculates its final aggregate score by dividing your JAMB score by 8 and adding it to your Post-UTME score (which is over 100).
1. Can You Study Law with 280?
Yes, absolutely.
For the 2025/2026 session, the merit cut-off for Law at UI was 70.875.
Your JAMB contribution: 280 \div 8 = 35
Target: To hit a 71+ aggregate, you would need roughly 36 marks out of 100 in the Post-UTME.
The Reality: While 36 sounds low, UI's Post-UTME is notoriously tricky. Aiming for 60–70+ in the Post-UTME will make you a "sure bet" for admission on the merit list.
2. How to Prepare for UI Post-UTME
UI’s Post-UTME is usually a Computer Based Test (CBT) consisting of 100 questions to be answered in 90 minutes.
The Subject Combination
Unlike JAMB where you have four distinct subjects, UI often tests you on:
Use of English: Expect heavy emphasis on lexis, structure, and oral English.
General Knowledge: This covers Current Affairs, History (very important for Law students), and basic logic.
Literature in English & Government: Since you are a Law candidate, expect specific questions from these core areas.
Your Prep Strategy
Master the Past Questions: This is the "holy grail." UI repeats themes and sometimes actual questions. Focus on the last 10 years of UI Post-UTME past questions.
Time Management: You have less than a minute per question. Practice with a timer to improve your speed.
Review Literature Texts: Don't just rely on JAMB summaries. Re-read the recommended poems and plays, as UI can ask very specific "inside-the-book" questions.
Stay Updated: Follow current affairs in Nigeria and internationally (judiciary news, names of key officials, and major global events).
