*What is homeostasis?*
Homeostasis is the process by which living organisms keep their internal environment stable and balanced, even when external conditions change.

Think of it as your body’s “auto-correct” system. Examples: keeping body temperature around $37^\circ C$, blood sugar level steady, water balance, and pH around 7.4. It’s mainly controlled by the brain, endocrine system, and organs like the kidney, skin, and liver.

*Functions of the kidney:*
Your kidneys are key homeostasis organs. Each person has two, and they do a lot more than just make urine.

1. *Excretion of waste* – Remove urea, creatinine, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes from blood to form urine.
2. *Osmoregulation* – Control water balance. Keep body fluids from getting too diluted or too concentrated by adjusting how much water is reabsorbed.
3. *Ion balance* – Regulate levels of $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Cl^-$, $Ca^{2+}$, $PO_4^{3-}$ in blood. Important for nerves and muscles.
4. *Acid-base balance* – Keep blood pH around 7.4 by excreting $H^+$ ions and reabsorbing $HCO_3^-$.
5. *Blood pressure control* – Release renin to control blood pressure through the renin-angiotensin system.
6. *Hormone production* –
- *Erythropoietin* (EPO) → stimulates red blood cell production in bone marrow
- *Calcitriol* → active form of vitamin D, helps absorb calcium
7. *Blood filtration* – Filter ∼180 L of blood per day, reabsorbing useful stuff like glucose, amino acids, and most water.
8. *Detoxification* – Help remove drugs and toxins from the bloodstream.

So basically, kidneys = waste removal + water/ion/pH/blood pressure control + hormone production. All of that keeps your internal environment stable, which is homeostasis in action.

Want me to explain how the kidney does osmoregulation?
