Question ONE
A motor vehicle of mases 1150kg absorbs 75kW when traveling at a steady speed of 160km/h on a level road. The resistance due to windage and road may be assumed to vary as the square of the spoed.
At full throttle the engine is capable of delivering 95kW at 160km/h and the torque output from the engine at full throttle may be assumed to be constant over a wide range of speed. Each of the four road wheels has a mass of 55kg,a radius of gyration of 230mm and a rolling radius of 350mm the rotating parts of the engine have a mass of 160kg and a radius of gyration of 80mm.the gear ratio between the engine and the back axle is 4.8 to 1.
From the above information, determine the time necessary forthis vehicle to accelerate from 100km/h to 150km/h at full throttle on an incline of 1 in 50.
Hint: see example 1.23 mechanics of machines (20 marks)
Question TWO
Three rotating masses,A=14 kg,B=11 kg,and C=21 kg,are attached to a shaft with their centers of gravity at 55 mm, 80 mm and 30 mm respectively from the shaft axis. The angular positions ofBand C from A are respectively 60° and 130° measured in the same diection. The distance between the planes of rotation of A and B is 1.5 m, and between B and C is 2.5 m in the same direction.Determine the magnitudes and angular positions with respect to A of two balance masses, each with its center of gravity at 55 mm from the shaft axis,to be attached in planes midway between A and B and between B and C.
