DETERMINATION OF ITS ELECTRICAL FORMULA
Weigh a porcelain crucible with its lid. Then place the Cu Wine supplied (about 1.0g) inside the crucible and weigh again Cover the wire with just enough powdered sulphur (an excess important) replace the lid on the crucible and heat the crucible on a pipe clay triangle with a good non-luminous flame for 1 hour Excess Sulphur will be observed to burn at the edge of the lid with a blue flame. As a check, place the flame around the sides of the crucible lid, for a few minutes, no flame of burning excess of Sulphur will be noticed. Transfer the list crucible with the lid st on to a dessicator and allow it to cool. Weigh the crucible when cool. Repeat the heating for 10 minutes, cool in the dessicator and reweigh. Repeat the heating and cooling until a CONSTANT WEIGHT is obtained. Record all heating time and weighings from the weight obtained, calculate the empirical formula for the sulphide. (Cu = 63.5, S=32). Write an equation for the reaction and also an equation explaining what happened to the excess of the Sulphur which was burnt off.?
