Ruminants, like cows, have a unique digestive system with four stomach compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. Digestion begins in the rumen, where microbes break down complex plant materials through fermentation. The partially digested food, called cud, is regurgitated and re-chewed.
Subsequently, the cud is swallowed again and passes through the other stomach compartments for further digestion and nutrient absorption. This specialized process allows ruminants to extract nutrients efficiently from fibrous plant materials.
