DATA EXERCISE ON PLOTTING OF GRAPHS AND THE DETERMINATION OF STANDARDS
(see the Appendix on Errors and the Treatment of Data)
ERRORS AND THE TREATMENT OF DATA (APPENDIX)
The physical chemistry experiments in the following periods involve plotting data on graphs and the calculation of expressions including the slope and intercept of straight lines together with the corresponding errors. This data exercise is designed to provide experience in this type of calculation.
The following table gives values of y for various values of a variable x.
(1)
Plot a graph of y against x
(2)
Calculate the best slope m
(Use the centroid method) and the intercept c and draw the line corresponding to these
A calculated point xy can be used as the second (see page 7-8 of the Appendix)
(3)
Calculate the standard errors of the slope and intercept (see the
(4)
Appendix)
Calculate the quantity -m/c and using the rules of he combination of errors, calculate the standard error in this quantity. (see the appendix)
