X is a mixture of an organic compound and an inorganic salt. carryout the following exercise on x. record your observation and indentify any gases evolved. state the conclusion you draw from the result of each test.
a) put all x in a beaker and add 10cm^3 of distilled water, stir the mixture thoroughly and filter. keep both the filtrate and the residue. test the filtrate with litmus paper.
b) divide the filtrate into four portions
i) to the first portion, add sodium hydroxide in drop and then in excess
ii) to the second portion, add aqueous ammonia in drops and then in excess
iii) to the third portion, add concentrate hydrochloric acid and heat, allow to cool.
iv) to the fourth portion, add concentrated tetraoxosulphate (vi) acid and warm gently
c) divide the residue into three portion,
i) to the first portion, add drops of iodine solution
ii) to the solution portion, add fehling's solution and warm gently
iii) to the third portion, add dilute hydrochloric acid, warm gently and then add fehling's solution.
d) from your observation and inference, identify the components of x
e) describe the action of heat on a solid sample of the inorganic component ; write equation of the reaction
f) state what would be observed if an aqueous suspension of the organic component were heated to boiling.?
