The shortest distance between A and E = Displacement.
X-component:
20cos90° + 15cos0° + 80cos270° + 10cos180°= 0 + 15 – 0 – 10= 5km
Y-component:
20sin90° + 15sin0° + 80sin270° + 10sin180°= 20 + 0 – 80 + 0= –60km
Displacement= √(5² + (–60)²)= √(25 + 3600)= √3625= 60.21km
OR
Using Pythagoras theorem,
AE= √(5² + 60²)= √3625= 60.21km
