A man drops a ball of mass 0.2kg from a vertical height of 5m. On impact with the ground it loses 2J of its energy. Calculate the height it reached when it rebounds?

SOLUTION
Energy of ball at the height of 5m = mgh
= 0.2kg × 10kgms–² × 5m
= 10 Joules
When an energy of 2J is lost,
The energy it used to fly back = 10 – 2 = 8J
8 = mgh
8 = 0.2 × 10 × h
h = 4m
This means that with the remaining energy of 8J, the ball will reach a height of 4m.
