An euphemism is an innocuous word or expression used in place of one that may be found offensive or suggest something unpleasant. Some euphemisms are intended to amuse, while others use bland, inoffensive terms for concepts that the user wishes to downplay.

In simple words, euphemism is the replacement of a word with another in order to lessen the harshness of it's meaning without actually changing the meaning.
Examples: using 'restroom' instead of 'toilet' probably because you're in the middle of a meal and you don't want other diners to feel disgusted. You haven't changed the meaning of the word but rather you replaced it with a milder one everyone will feel comfortable with.
