Ultraviolet radiation means:ultraviolet: radiation lying in the ultraviolet range; wave lengths shorter than light but longer than X rays.. Infrared radiation means: electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths longer than visible light but shorter than radio waves.
Ultraviolet rays (UV) are higher energy waves than the light spectrum (hence their name: higher energy than violet, or "ultra-violet"). Because they are high energy, they do damage to exposed skin tissue (among other things). Infrared rays (IR) are just the opposite. They have less energy than red light (infra- means "below"), and we sense IR waves as heat.
