The Kaduna State Government has denied reports that it deployed security operatives to crack down on students of the state-owned College of Education, Gidan Waya in Jema’a Local Government Area, who were protesting against increment of school fees. 

Students of the institution had on Monday, June 28, staged a protest over a hike in school fees, when security operatives opened fire in an attempt to forcefully disperse them. It is believed that a student was allegedly shot dead during the facade.

One of the protesters who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity said they came out to protest over the increment of school fees in the state-owned institution when they met security operatives outside the college. Also speaking, the President of Nigerian and Kaduna State Students (NAKASS) Comrade Tajudden Kabir, who confirmed the incident said two students were feared dead during the protest.

The Kaduna Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, in a statement, confirmed that one student died while three security personnel were injured. The statement, however, debunks reports that it deployed security operatives to suppress protesting students.
