Health workers at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, on Friday suspended an indefinite strike.

The workers embarked on the strike on March 24 under the aegis of LASUTH Workers’ Forum.

The Chairman of the forum, Mr Rasheed Bamishe, announced the suspension at a congress organised by the forum.

He said that the workers would resume on March 31.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the workers were demanding the implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Scale, refund of deducted allowances and restoration of shift duty allowance.

They equally demanded one month salary bonus as allegedly paid to selected healthcare providers.

“Our position collectively is that we are suspending the strike with immediate effect from Monday, March 31. The decision is based on the commitment we got from the management of LASUTH and backed up with the board resolution on the issues of free health service and uniforms for the staff.

“We also got commitment from the Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, assuring us that the issues on the ground would be addressed,” Bamishe said.

The chairman said the workers would ensure that the hospital environment would be clean before the resumption date.

“It is not our wish to go on strike, but it became necessary that we had no option. We pray and hope that we will be able to give the best to encourage our patients,” he said.

All efforts made to reach members of LASUTH management including the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Wale Oke, and Public Relations Officer, Mr Dele Johnson, for comments proved abortive.
