The Kaduna State Government has approved the reinstatement of 1,288 out of the  2,192 public primary school teachers that were sacked in June 2022 after the conduct of a competency test organized by the government.

The teachers were sacked in June 2022, by the state government for refusing to sit for the competency test conducted by the State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB). The government also sacked the state president of the National Union of Teachers, Ibrahim Dalhatu, after it was revealed that the union had instructed the teachers not to sit for the test. Read here

The government has now announced the reinstatement of the teachers in a statement issued by the Public Relation Officer of the State Universal Basic Education Board,  Hajiya Mohammed, on Wednesday, April 5.

According to the statement, 1,266 teachers were affected by the competency test, while 22 others were removed from the government payroll for alleged unproven claims. It added that some dismissed teachers complained to the state government that they wrote the competency test and were still sacked, while those who claimed to be sick during the time of the test provided proof.

The KADSUBEB spokesperson further said 61 teachers claimed to have been kidnapped at the time of the test, adding that others among them were suspended due to verification of their certificates. The affected teachers have been instructed to collect their reinstatement letters from their respective education secretaries immediately.
