This video lesson provides a detailed explanation of the approximant sounds. These are sounds produced with minimal or no obstruction of the air stream. In producing the approximant sounds, the articulators approach each other without causing friction and the air is able to flow almost completely free with little or no tension in the vocal tract. There are 4 approximant sounds in phonetics and each is explained with examples of the words that contain the sound. This video also explains the exceptions in the application of letters and sound correspondence.
Lesson objective includes;
- The meaning of approximant
- The classification of approximants (liquids and semi-vowels)
- How to articulate and describe each approximant sound
- Letters of the English alphabet that can represent each sound
