the light ray has to travel from denser to less dense medium

Total internal reflection occurs when a ray of light travels from a denser medium to a less dense medium and the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle for that pair of media. The critical angle is the angle of incidence that results in the refracted ray lying along the boundary between the two media.

To determine which of the given cases cannot produce total internal reflection, we need to identify the case where the light ray would not travel from a denser medium to a less dense medium.

In the given options:
A. Glass to water: Possible, as glass is denser than water.
B. Kerosene to air: Possible, as kerosene is denser than air.
C. Air to water: Possible, as air is less dense than water.
D. Water to ice: Not possible, as ice is denser than water.

Therefore, the correct answer is:

D. Water to ice

one of the conditions for total internal reflection is that light must be travelling from an optically dense medium to an optically less dense medium...air however is less dense than water..it should be the other way round for total internal reflection to occur..that makes it the right answer for the question.
