the vernier scale is 16 cm, so 16/100 = 0.16 add the main scale + the vernier scale and that's is 4.0 + 0.16 = 4.16

@Abdullahi. go and consult calculation in physics by" Charles Asemota" chapter 5 fig1.4 .
you will understand more. don't argue on what you don't know ok

When reading a micrometer screw gauge, the correct counting sequence is:
0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, ...
Not 0, 1, 2, 3, 4.
This is because each division on the thimble represents 0.5 units (usually 0.01 mm or 10 μm) of measurement.

go to lamlad's UTME physics. you will see they solved this question too and got 4.66

my school you guys are wrong.
it's is
4.5+(16×0.01)
=4.5+0.16
=4.66.
the reading is 4.5 not 4 ooo

main scale is 4.5
vernier scale is 16
therefore vernier scale* msg accuracy
16 * 0.01 = 0.16
therefore we say
main scale + vernier scale = 4.66
