Impedance = √Resistance² + Capacitance reactance²
In symbols;
Z = √ R² + Xc²
13 = √5² + Xc²
Square both sides in order to remove tge square root on the RHS;
13² = 5² + Xc²
Collect like terms;
13² - 5² = Xc²
169 - 25 = Xc²
144 = Xc²
Xc = √144
Xc = 12 ohms.
