to get the reading on a vernier caliper...you look at the upper and lower scale.......the lower scale is the vernier scale or reading while the upper scale is the main scale.........first you look at the beginning of the lower scale and the reading of the upper scale which in the diagram is 1.3cm and then you'll look at the lower scale and check if there is any line that alines with the upper scale for instances in the diagram 0.09 in the vernier scale alines with the 1.7 in the main scale.....so you add your main scale plus your vernier scale which is equal to 1.3+0.09=1.39cm........this is the best i can explain.

MSR= 1.30cm
VSR= 9ร—0.01=0.09
1.30+0.09=1.39cm
