alpha particle has the nature of an helium therefore having two (2) protons
while beta has the nature of an electron which has zero proton so therefore, when the nucleus disintegrate with the release of a beta and an alpha particle it reduces the atomic number to -2
84-2-0=82 for the atomic number,
202-4-1=197 for the mass number

what about the alpha decay

When beta is emitted it will reduce the atomic number by one i.e add -1
making the atomic number of the question above to be 84-1=83
