To convert a galvanometer into an ammeter, we need to modify it so it can measure higher currents without damage.
A galvanometer is a very sensitive device that can only pass a small current (called full-scale deflection current, Ig) safely. We connect a low resistance called shunt (S) in parallel with the galvanometer.
