Class cracks with temperature changes because it is a bad thermal conductor. This means that if one part of glass gets warm quickly, this heat will not move though the glass very quickly. When a most substances are heated they expand.

When thick glass placed in hot water, the surface warms first and expands. The deeper glass doesn't get warmed as quickly and doesn't expand as much. When one part of the glass expands more than another, it creates stress in the glass. When this stress exceeds the strength of the glass, it cracks.

Thin glass behaves the same way, but less stress develops because the glass stays closer to the same temperature.
