The surface of the water is not perfectly flat, but looks apparently flat at the middle but curves upward as you go out radially towards the wall of the container, this is because the force of adhesion exceeds that of cohesion and hence at the interface at the surface between the water and the walls of the container each molecules of the water are greatly attracted sideways and some at angles, this therefore gives it a meniscus.
