What is the difference in the amount of heat given out by 4kg of steam and 4kg of water when both are cooled from 100oC to 80oC? (Specific latent heat of steam = 2.260,000J kg-1) (Specific heat capacity of water =4,200 J kg-1)

a

336,000J

b

672,000J

c

8,704,000J

d

9,040,000J

e

i think this is D beacsue the question said when both steam and water at 100 degrees are cooled to 80 degreee
thats is... steam cool to water at a 100 degrees then to water at 80 degrees and water only cools from water at a 100 degreees to water at 80 degrees...

then total heat diff = (Mlv + mc&) - mc&
= mlv + mc& - mc&
=mlv
therefore. =4(2,260,000) =9,040,000

The correct answer is obviously option D since the the difference is the "Latent heat of vaporation of steam". Thus steam contains both heat of vaporation and heat capacity; and so we have 4×2.26×10^6=9,040,000 J

The answer is wrong since both steam and water is cooled from 100°C to 80°C (but in the answer, it was only water that was cooled and not both ❌).

So it'll be Q1 - Q2 = (ml + mcθ) - (mcθ)

It's easy to solve since mass is the same, specific heat capacity,c , is also the same together with temperature difference.

So, it'll be

ml + mcθ - mcθ
= ml
= 4× 2,260,000
=9,040,000J

This is just because both the water and steam dropped to 80°C.

I hope you consider it

The answer is D now since we were told that both the steam and the water were cooled from 100 celsius to 80 celsius so we have( mass x latent heat of steam +mass x specific heat capacity x change in temperature )- (mass x specific heat capacity change in temperature ) = 9,376,000-336,000=9,040,000
