I feel the answer should be C because the main function of the split rings is to REVERSE THE DIRECTION OF CURRENT in the coil so that it can rotate continuously in one direction

So...
CURRENT DIRECTION => REVERSED
COIL DIRECTION => CONSTANT

And if the current direction is continuously reversed doesn't that make it alternating???
I may be wrong and I'm open to any corrections..
