Two charged particles are projected into a region where there is a magnetic field perpendicular to their velocities. if the charges are deflected in opposite directions, which of the following statements is true of the charge?

a

the charge must be of opposite sign

b

positive charges are more in number

The answer is A, the question isn't really worded well.
Lets say originally the charged particles are parallel to each other(when they're projected), the mg field is perpendicular to their velocity..lets assume their velocity is on the x axis and mg field is acting in y axis direction, the only direction left for the force to act on is the z-axis(think of it as coming out of the page, or going into the page).
Using flemings right hand rule, you can see that the force will be on the z-axis(coming out of the page/your palm).
Positive charges follow flemings right hand rule, but for negative charges the force acts in the opposite direction(which would be into the page/out of the back of your hand)...
So the questions says the charges are deflected in opposite directions, following what I said, that is only possible if they're of opposite sign, if they were like charges they would go in the same direction(coming out of the page/your palm)..

I don't really know how to explain properly on here but this video is very helpful on the entire topic of magnets in general - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csMqfwJRjCs

Answer: A

They have opposite charges. The direction of the force on the charged particle depends on the type of charge. The magnetic force is calculated by using a cross product that is dependent on the type of charge.

I do not agree. liked( ++ or - -) charges repel and unliked charges attract. it should be D

check pg 438 new school physics
the answer should be D
since unlike pole repel and like poles attract

thats what i think if im wrong please explain

That's freaking wrong....since the magnetic field is perpendicular to itz velocity, and it was deflected that means that they av like charge........either ++ or --
